Award-winning, international theatre company Liver & Lung Productions is showcasing the second installment of it’s critically acclaimed, sell-out historical musical series, Malaya Relived. Please find below a Press Release for Malaya Relived: Merdeka. We thought it would be of your interest to feature/review our show. We look forward to hearing from you!
Malaya Relived: Merdeka
By Liver & Lung (in Partnership with GMBB)
Freedom, fidelity and forbidden love. Merdeka, the second installment of the immersive Malaya Relived musical series, seeks to unveil the cultural challenges and the ideological threats our ancestors had to overcome in their fight for Malayan independence.
When Sylvia Graham (UK-based actor Hannah Shields), a British Foreign Correspondent, travels to Malaya, she hopes to pen the article of her career, offering a fresh account on what the country’s fight for independence will mean for the British Empire. Little does she know that she’s about to rewrite the plot of her own life when she meets Raj Veerasamy (Ola Bola’s Prem Sagar), a formidable proponent of decolonization, active member of the Malaysian Indian Congress and staunch supporter of the rising anti-colonial Malaysian movement, Merdeka.
As Merdeka gathers momentum, Shivani Chandra (Shangkharee Nadarajan), Raj’s beautifully vibrant student, searches for her place in the world as a young Indian woman. Through her weekly English lessons with Raj, she pushes him to use his power to do more than pay lip service to the plight of Malayan Indians. Caught between his lust for Sylvia, his love of Malaya and the question of his cultural heritage, Raj must decide where his loyalties lie as he seeks to reconcile his fragmented identity and set himself, and Malaya, free.
Brought to life in the form of a three-act musical, the show invites you on a time-bending journey as you are given the rare opportunity to visit Malaya in the 50s. Strung together with original music inspired by classical Indian ragas and the dulcet tones of P Ramlee, Liver & Lung promises a colourful journey with familiar sounds, smells and tastes. Audiences are invited to dress in their best 50s traditional wear, enjoy the kueh and witness Malaysian history unfold before their eyes. As with all Malaya Relived performances, expect a proudly Malaysian showcase of local culture and heart-warming nostalgia.

LIVER & LUNG PRESENTS
A NEW MUSICAL SERIES
Black magic, betrayal and the British occupation. Liver & Lung brings its critically acclaimed Relived series to Kuala Lumpur this March.
1940 Malaya. Zabir and Zubaida, a brother-sister duo, have a difficult task at hand. All at once, they are investigating their father’s mysterious death, keeping their family at peace and surviving British rule in colonial Singapore.
What’s worse, Zabir blames their father’s death on Zubaida’s courtship with a British soldier and Zubaida, on the other hand, is convinced that there are larger supernatural forces at play.
Amidst this tragedy, the impending threat of the Japanese occupation casts a dark shadow across the country.
The Fall of Singapore, the first of the Malaya Relived series, is an immersive new three-act musical that seeks to unravel the tenuous foundations that the Malayan cultural identity is built upon.
Prepare to enter a time travelling portal as the show takes place in a beautiful new KL gallery which we have transformed into a dilapitated kampung living room.
In a live-like funeral setting, expect to be serenaded with an eclectic mix of moving, original music, heart-rending streams of contemporary sounds fused with a colonial, oriental twist.
Woven in a colourful tapestry of familiar sounds and smells, this proudly Malaysian musical promises to be a spectacular showcase of our local culture, serving as a reminder of our past realities in the most poignant of means.
